Time to haul the trash!

[buzzins.jpg]
Buzzin's
"Stress is the trash of modern life. We all generate it, but if we don't dispose of it properly it will pile up and overtake our life." WOW! That is a powerful and inciteful little line. Read it again...Yup...we all have stress. It's how we deal with it and dispose of it that matters. First you have to IDENTIFY your stress - admit it's there. Don't ignore it. Unfortunately our knee jerk reaction to stress is to EAT! One of the objectives on our weight loss journey is to learn other ways to deal with stress...not automatically reach out and grab something to Examine the reason for the stress eating. Relief from the stress? Comfort? Pleasure? There has to be a reason that we keep doing it. There is something positive we get out of it. Once we figure out what it is we can look for other ways to get that same feeling without resorting to food. Some ideas you might try are a hot bubble bath (Guys, don't discount this as a girly thing. Try it before you totally disregard it!) take a walk, read, call a friend, write a letter to a shut-in. What ever works for you. If one thing doesn't work, try something else next time. We CAN and WILL get this under control. And what better time than NOW...the Holi-Daze with it's own stress points. Identify-Examine-Decide...Identify the stress, Examine what you are getting from the stress eating, decide what to do instead to get the same result. Give it a try and throw out the stress "trash" before it overtakes you! YOU CAN DO IT! Grab the trash bag and get to work!

What is your GTF?

[buzzins.jpg]
Buzzin's
A Go-To-Food (GTF) is one that will satisfy you and keep you OP (on plan). Your GTF is one that you always have in the house or car, that you don't even have to put on your shopping list because you are going to get it every time. Over the last week I have taken a poll and here are some of the favorite GTFs:

Weight Watchers Snacks (especially Fruities)
Popcorn
Sandwich Thins
Fresh Fruit and Vegetables (especially bananas and baby carrots)
Fat Free Cottage Cheese
Fiber One Bars
String Cheese

What is yours? What really helps you stay away from the Holiday Temptations? Keep your GTF handy to help you over the rough times and help you make your way past the goodies in the teachers lounge, or the break room, or on your co-workers desk...We're going to eat something...so it might as well be something we choose and can live with...something we have learned will be on our side not on our hips!!!

Interesting Stuff:
Are you in Panic Mode? Be not afraid! Go to
Panic Button and find some timely help!

Goodie Box

Friendship Tea
1/2 Point per Tablespoon

  • 2 cups orange-flavored drink mix (e.g. Tang)
  • 2 cups Splenda
  • 1/4 cup instant tea powder
  • 3/4 cup lemon-flavored instant tea powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

Combine everything and store in an air tight container. To enjoy mix 1 Tablespoon in 8 ounces boiling water...more or less to taste. Perfect on a cold day or evening. I use decaf tea powders.

NOTE: This makes a great gift. Put about 1 cup of the mix in a zip lock bag. Place the bag in a pretty tea cup. PERFECT!

BLT's (Bites, Licks and Tastes) have Points too!

~Challenge~ Keep MOVING toward your goal...
because even if you're on the right track
you'll get run over if you just sit there!

You have the tools...

[buzzins.jpg]
Buzzin's
Congrats! You made it through Thanksgiving. Let's look back over the week and see what worked for you and what didn't. Regardless of how you did you learned something. How did you handle the food pushers? The emotional eating? The temptations? Think about it and see what you are going to do again and what really stunk-on-ice (that's really bad!) and you will never do again. What foods satisfied you and what led you down the garden path to Binge-dom? This is important information that only applies to YOU. Being aware of this stuff is the first step. Now you have to apply it and use it. You're armed with the tools to succeed and they are at the ready...USE THEM! 'Cause in the words of my friend Monk, "It's a jungle out there!"

Interesting Stuff:

Bound or Guided?

[buzzins.jpg]
Buzzin's
Tradition.... Are you BOUND by it GUIDED by it? There is a big difference. I have a family story that illustrates this point to a T! Every year I would make THE Holiday Breakfast Casserole. It was a lot of trouble...took 2 days. But it was TRADITION and I felt like everyone would be disappointed if it wasn't there. So each year I would make it. I looked it well enough but if were just me I wouldn't make it. About 5 years ago we are all sitting at the holiday breakfast table and I presented THE afore mentioned Breakfast Casserole. We all served our plates and began to eat. It was quiet and my youngest son (sitting with children of his own...) calmly said, "You know Mom, we all hate this casserole." Hmmm, how does one respond to that? I honestly took it better that the rest of the family at the table. Life as we know it stopped. Now one made eye contact with anything but their plate. I just said, "Oh, really? Guess it's cereal and OJ next year." I would like to think it says a lot about my relationship with...well...David anyway...that he felt confident enough to tell me. It was a relief to me! It was too much trouble and too many Points! Take it from me....just because you THINK is has to be there...maybe it doesn't! And it sure doesn't have to be food. Start a new non-food tradition...walk after the big meal, talent show, Ugly Bug contest...? Sounds like fun!!!

Your Holi-Daze Plan

The time has come to make your PLAN for the HOLI-DAZE. With Thanksgiving, Christmas, The New Year, the odd birthday and the myriad of office, friends, family and church parties and gatherings! Yeowza! See??? Time to make your plan NOW before the hysteria sets in and there is too much going on to think straight. Where do you want to be on January 1, 2010? Yup...2010! WRITE IT DOWN. (How about writing yourself a post card and giving it to someone to mail back to you the first week in January?) 1. Make your goal reasonable and doable. To begin with you have 3 choices: lose, gain or maintain. Which one will satisfy you? 2. Then no matter which one you pick continue to track. That will at least give you a sense of control no matter what is going on around you. 3. Do your best in making choices. 4. Be sure to write this on your list: ENJOY THE HOLI-DAZE! There are certain things that you look forward to eating that only come around during the holidays. Be sure you include those in your plan. This is NOT the last holiday you will celebrate and if things don't go as planned at least you know what not to do next year. But if all goes swell then YEAH! You know what to do next time to be on plan, satisfied and HAPPY! You're in control...now get after it!

Interesting Stuff:
Here is the Weight Watchers Thanksgiving Guide. for help with your PLAN!

Goodie Box

Here a great easy recipe that might be a new family favorite!
Parmesan Creamed Spinach
4 servings (1/2 cup each) @ 1 Point each

2 (9-ounce) bags baby spinach
2/3 cup low-fat (1%) milk
1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 garlic clove, minced
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1/8 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup grated Parmesan

1. Put the spinach in a steamer basket; set in a large pot over 1 inch of boiling water (the leaves will be tightly packed but will reduce in volume as they wilt). Cover tightly and steam until bright green, about 2 minutes. Drain in a colander; when the spinach is cool enough to handle, squeeze out the excess moisture.

2. Whisk the milk, flour, garlic, nutmeg, and pepper together in a medium saucepan until blended. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly; cook until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the Parmesan. Add the spinach and cook, stirring constantly, just until heated through, about 2 minutes.
